Welcome to The Democracy Forum
|
|
Welcome to the Democracy Forum - an online public space provided by The Hansard Society for the debate of issues concerning parliamentary democracy in the UK.
The Hansard Society promotes effective parliamentary democracy. It is an independent, non-partisan educational charity whose President is the Rt Hon. Michael Martin MP, Speaker of the House of Commons. There are many issues concerning parliament, legislation and democratic citizenship which call for intelligent public debate. This web site is intended as one forum for that debate to take place. It is open to all citizens, but there are rules of debate which we ask all participants to follow. This is a monitored debate.
Debates taking place in the Democracy Forum will be the subject of research and evaluation as part of our Parliament and the Electronic Media programme. If you have comments about the form, style, content or value of the Democracy Forum, please let us know.

This was the first Parliamentary online forum about a draft Bill - it
was genuinely useful to the Parliament's Joint Committee on the
draft Communications Bills and will result in better law. Your interest
and, more importantly, your contributions were needed, from as wide a range of
views as possible. Contributions were summarised and
reported back to the Committee regularly. It was also possible to watch part of the
Committee meetings - on the web. Click on Commbill.net button to learn more. |

On 7 March 2001 The House of Lords appointed a Select Committee on Stem Cell Research to consider and report on issues connected with human cloning and stem cell research arising from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Research Purposes) Regulations 2001. In conjunction with traditional forms of evidence-gathering, the Committee has appointed the Hansard Society to undertake an online consultation, designed to encourage wider debate of the issues.
The Committee is keen for informed individuals, who may or may not have had prior involvement in the debate around stem cell research, to participate in the consultation.
